The Wharton School and Penn Engineering were proud to host the fourth annual Women in Data Science (WiDS) @ Penn Conference on February 3, 2023. For the first time since the pandemic, attendees joined us on campus for in-person talks showcasing the latest advances in data science, speaker Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities.

A celebrated interdisciplinary event, WiDS @ Penn welcomed academic, industry, and student speakers from across the data science landscape to celebrate its diversity, both in subject matter and personnel.

The WiDS @ Penn Committee is dedicated to creating equitable opportunities to educate the next generation of female data scientists and analytics leaders. We are thrilled to announce that this year we raised more than $17,000 to support need-based scholarships for female high school students. These scholarships expose young talent to the field of data science and analytics and enable students, regardless of their background, to participate in the Wharton Data Science Academy.

Academic Talks

Homa Hosseinmardi presents recent work that assesses the TV news consumption habits of tens of thousands of American adults in a longitudinal observational study to uncover their news viewership patterns.

In this presentation, Julia Stoyanovich argues the decisions we make during data collection and preparation profoundly impact the robustness, fairness, and interpretability of the systems we build, and our responsibility for the operation of these systems does not stop when they are deployed.

This work develops and estimates a dynamic model, which integrates value-added and school choice models, to evaluate grade-by-grade and the cumulative impacts of the Mexican Prospera conditional cash transfer (CCT) program on educational achievement.

Industry Panel

Three industry titans – Krystal Barker Buissereth, Head of Financial Wellness at Morgan Stanley, Sarah Norman, Vertical Manager of Enterprise at TikTok, and Julie Roehm, Former Chief Marketing and Experience Officer at Party City – joined Wharton AI & Analytics for Business Executive Director Mary Purk to offer vital career advice for women in data science.

Student Talks

This study aims to identify the major factors that influence retail gasoline prices in the United States using multiple linear regression, LASSO, text mining, and random forest. The results will display factors influencing the price of gasoline and predict future gasoline prices.

Google and Apple’s Exposure Notifications System (ENS) was developed early in the COVID-19 pandemic to complement existing contact tracing efforts while protecting user privacy. Sukanya Joshi assessed the motivation and experience of individuals who downloaded ENS apps.

Using sentiment analysis, keyword extraction, and topic modeling, the Wharton Analytics Accelerator student team, led by Joanna Yang, derived business insights from McDonald’s complaint data.

Sarah Hu, an undergraduate at the Wharton School, analyzes wide receiver-cornerback matchups to evaluate defenders and create game plan strategies.
